MIA – Mothers in Action
Peru’s textile art and wool fibers are some of the best in the world and when this fact meets a good idea great things are born. MIA is a good example of that.
MIA is a volunteer organization in Peru – Mothers in action – that has the goal and purpose of helping single mothers and families with low income providing them with work.
The group is form by single mothers and widows from the Peruvian Andes. These ladies use knitting skills passed down to them from their ancestors to create beautiful machine and handmade garments with the finest Peruvian alpaca fibbers, baby alpaca and cotton using today’s designs to create modern clothes and accessories with excellent quality. The sales of their high quality creations enable them to better support themselves and their children
MIA was founded in 2007 by Mrs. America Durand to fulfill her dream of helping poor children in Peru, as a mother herself, she learned that the best way to help the children was to first assist their mothers, MIA provides now several Peruvian mothers with work which they can do from their homes while attending to their young kids, Mrs. Durand buys the alpaca wool and prepare the orders, so that the women can work from their homes in Chaclacayo, Lima and Huancayo, city in the Andes. This enables the women to send their kids to school and improve their quality of living.
MIA is still small, but is growing with the help of MIA Norway, enthusiastic Norwegians that wanted to help mothers and children and join the project, there are now more than 60 women who has jobs thanks to them.
MIA is run by fair-trade-principles, with better salaries, no expenses and they get professional help to distribute their beautiful hand-made alpaca creations to buyers. Hopefully MIA will continue to grow and to help Mothers and children.
